What to Wear: Boudoir

Boudoir merely means a lady’s private bedroom, dressing, or sitting room- so this type of photography captures the essence of a lady in her private chambers. Boudoir photography is based on sensuality, not sexuality. Boudoir photographs are softer in appearance (no, I don’t mean fuzzy!) than those of a pin up or glamour style . There is rarely nudity, as it is implied in boudoir, rather than displayed (ie: covered by a sheet is such a way that it implies you have nothing under there). So what do you bring with you to wear at a boudoir session?

Why, your favourite undergarments! Plain, fancy, frilly, or old fashioned. Us ladies buy ourselves pretty underthings and nighties often (or at least we should), so go through your drawers to get your boudoir outfits started. Find you favourite pieces that you love to wear because they are comfortable, or make you feel like the sexy woman you are. Underwear, bras, stockings, garter belts, socks, corsets, bustiers, nighties, slips, teddies, big comfy sweaters, sheer or lacy tops, and body suits- your options are sky high! You’ll be amazed at all the wonderful things you have in your drawers and closets right now that you could bring to the studio for a fabulous boudoir session. This doesn’t mean you can’t go out for a shopping trip to get something new surprise your partner with, I would never deny a lady her shopping trips!

The best part about boudoir is: your undergarments don’t have to match! You an have a bright red leopard print bustier and a black pair of ruffle bummed panties on and you’ll still look freaking amazing. By wearing tops and bottoms that don’t match you create contrast and interest in your images. That is not saying if your favourite underwear outfit matches, you can’t wear it. You’ll look good in whatever you choose to wear for your shoot as long as you follow this one simple rule:

Remember: it needs to fit you right for you to look your best in front of the camera, especially those bras! Go to a lingerie shop and get properly fitted, you wont regret it!

If you are doing this session for your man, don’t forget to raid his closet and drawers! Grab one or two of his shirts, and a hat or tie from his collection. Men love to see their ladies in their clothes. I think its a primal thing!

Don’t forget a pair or two of killer heels! Heels just have to power to make you feel sexy and desirable. I always suggest at least a pair of closed toe black heels and then a pair or two of your choice.  This could mean some strappy sandals or that kick ass pair of tan boots you want to wear with your fuzzy white cardigan. If you’ve got gloves, sleep masks, and jewellery you love, these items make great accessories and props to add to your boudoir outfits, so bring them along.

If you are in need of more ideas or inspiration I strongly recommend you surf Pinterest for 20 minutes. You’ll find an over flow of great ideas. Start a boudoir board and make sure to add me to it so I can see what wonderful ideas you are collection and help you make your boudoir dreams a reality!
